Early TNG-era Starfleet Uniform Jumpsuit Analysis
Part 8a - Pants Split and Piping
At the bottom of each of the TNG jumpsuit's pant legs was an upside-down-V-shaped split.

The lower front leg split was embellished with division-colored piping.

The method used to attach the piping - and the end result - seemed to vary; sometimes it seems to have been done hastily (which wouldn't be surprising, considering episodic television time constraints and the sheer number of these uniforms that had to be made and maintained).

Usually, though, the division-colored piping embellishment looked quite good!
Note that the upper edges of the piping were not "flat" (i.e. horizontal) across the top of the pants split, but, rather, the pants split (and piping) tapered upward to a point.

Oddly, the uppermost couple inches or so of the lower leg piping on Q's uniform appear to have been sewn closed.

The lower front leg piping detail is more easily observable in these auction photos.

The TNG jumpsuit pant legs' hem allowances were simply turned up and blind-stitched into place.
